Frequently Asked Questions:
What are Mala Beads?
Mala beads a strand of beads, traditionally used for counting during mantra meditations. Malas have been used since at least the 10th century as a meditation aid. Many people choose to use their mala in contexts outside of seated meditation. Wearing a mala as a bracelet or necklace is common. This helps keep your affirmations or intentions with you throughout the day. Whichever way you choose to use your mala, mala beads can be a representative object of your intentions or affirmations and are powerful for helping focus the mind on that which you most hope to develop through your yoga and meditation practice.
What is the significance of 108 beads?
The number 108 is sacred in many different ways - for all of the different, and very neat, ways it is significant check out this page. Our Favourite is regarding the heart chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.
How do I use my Mala Beads?
Once you have chosen a mantra, affirmation, or intention, using your mala beads is simple. Find a quiet place where you're the least likely to be interrupted, sit down in a comfortable position (the stereotypical cross-legged, straight back position is not necessary), and starting with the bead just above the guru, recite your mantra, affirmation or intention with each bead, working in a clockwise direction. It's important to hold the beads between your thumb and middle finger, not using your index finger to turn each bead. Your index finger symbolizes one's ego, and the ego is what prevents us from reaching enlightenment.
How do I choose a Mala?
Choosing a mala can be a difficult, overwhelming task with all the amazing options out there. Our best suggestion is to choose mala beads that call to you. You may find yourself drawn to more than one and that's okay - the benefits of the gemstones on each may be of benefit to you right now. In the end, there is no right or wrong mala for you, and no right or wrong way to choose one you love.
How do I cleanse my Mala Beads?
Because mala beads absorb and transmute energy, they need to be cleansed often. The easiest way to do so is by letting them sit in sunlight or moonlight. During the new and full moon is a great time to cleanse your beads, and very easy, since it can be done while you sleep. Simply lay your beads out in a spot they'll be exposed to moonlight (or sunlight, if you prefer to cleanse them during the day).

108 beads at 8mm each. Hangs 47cm long (57cm including tassel). One big thing that sets us apart from most, if not all, other mala beads is that we only create 100% vegan pieces. This means we do not use silk, coral, pearls, shells, or any other type of animal product in the making of our malas. While this means our tassels may not be as buttery soft as others, we stand firmly behind our decision to be animal friendly.
